♙Kai Hamilton♙
-
With Jonas’s blessing, Kai and his team moved out to the lower district. Kai had a sinking feeling however he knew exactly how these questions were going to go. It didn’t take long to get to the lower district and from the start the information-seeking went off just about as well as Kai expected.
They decided to break up into two teams to get this done quickly. Kai was paired with Arthur which was fine, he would have preferred to be with Rafeeqa but he figured out why the teams were set up like this. Jaivon and Kai were known to be rather blunt and abrasive when it came to interrogations, Jaivon especially. And the questioning in term went about as well as Kai expected it to go. Some were combative, Jaivon was so close to coming to physical blows when talking with Jake. Others were on edge talking with them as was everyone around them in fact. However, their stories didn’t deter from what they had said before, that nothing happened and it was just some party. The sun was just starting to set as they were narrowing the wrap-up point. They decided to take the last one together as he was actually one of the farthest on.
“Useless all of them..” Jaivon lets out a curse as he practically shaking with anger.
While Kai could understand the frustration of not really getting anything so far after all the questions however he was more or less expecting this.
“Clearly whatever really happens is important enough to hide.” Kai said almost in passing.
“What are you talking about Hamilton?” Jaivon said with a long-winded sigh.
“I mean think about it. Whatever really happened was important enough for all of them to be kept quiet. It would be the only reason that they would all be having the same story.” Kai said with a shrug.
“Well I mean obviously but what is that gonna do for us? We basically wasted all day and got nothing new than when we started.” Jaivon grumbles.
Kai doesn’t bother to answer that as it is obvious Jaivon is looking for an argument.
“Let’s.. just find Ameer. I asked the guys who patrol this area and they said he’s usually around here.” Rafeeqa says as she glances around.
They were currently in a small neighborhood, dingy apartments packed rather close together and dark alleyways all around. It took a bit of time to find Ameer, he was stalking out of an alleyway, looking around nervously.
“Ameer Shepard?”
“..Eh, who the hell are-”
His words are cut short upon seeing them. His entire demeanor changes in an instant, eyes narrowing in a glare, a frown pulling to his lips and his arms going cross over his chest. Kai almost sighed in response, if that was his initial response to seeing them then this was going to be another dead end.
“…What do you want?” He asks, his gaze watching all of them like a hawk.
He was acting like they were going to jump him or something which given that more than likely he was here to get drugs probably would be the response he would normally get. Jaivon holds out the image of Sarah. Ameer’s expression twisted but only for a moment, he was quick to get himself under control. But that moment was more than enough for Jaivon and his team to pick up on.
“You know her? Where was the last time you saw her?!” Jaivon said
“I don’t know shit… " Ameer said almost immediately.
“Funny, you certainly look like you do.” Jaivon presses, stepping a bit closer.
Jaivon was trying to intimidate as usual but Ameer seemed the turtle up even more. He now refused to look at them.
“We already know you and her know each other. Had a bit of disappearing act when you were teens.”
Ameer tenses up just a bit before turning even more like he was hoping if he didn’t see or address them, that they would magically disappear.
“Help us out here. We need to find her.” Jaivon said again.
Jaivon was doing well to keep that the fact she was the killer on the loose a secret as it hasn’t yet been officially released to the public. It was a bit frustrating tip-toeing around it but soon it won’t be a issue.
“..Like I said I don’t know nothing…”
“I’m not asking about your past. Have you seen her recently? Like in the past week or so. Something?”
“I….. I don’t know..” Ameer says.
“Bullshit!”
Kai started to notice that Ameer was shaking very lightly. He was terrified either of Sarah or someone else. Probably whoever was making him lie about the disappearance case.
“Leave it Jaivon… " Kai sas.
Jaivon looks like he wants to argue but seeing the rest of his team also shaking their head in agreement with Kai, he lets it drop. He let out a curse before walking out of the alleyway. Rafeeqa and Arthur go to follow him but Rafeeqa stops at seeing Kai still standing before Ameer.
“You coming?”
“Yeah in a bit.”
Rafeeqa pauses only for a second before nodding and walking off. Now alone with Ameer, he seem to relax but only just a small portion. He’s glaring at Kai who was just watching him without speaking.
“…W-what? You gonna grill me too?”
“..No, there would be no point. You obviously don’t want to talk. If that’s due to whoever is threatening you or because I’m a cop, I’m not sure.” Kai said casually.
Ameer seemed to be taken by surprise by the rather blunt delivery of Kai’s statement. It was also at that moment that Ameer seemed to take Kai in fully before his eyes widened at bit.
“…Y-you’re that Bloodhound right?”
Kai strains a smile on his face at hearing his …nickname.
“You heard of me have you?”
“Yeah… seen a lot about you on tv at the bars.”
Kai nods and then for a moment there is an awkward silence.
“…I really don’t know… b-but…”
Kai waits patiently for Ameer to continue. Poor guy looks like he was one step away from having a breakdown just from talking.
“…..Don’t know why ya’ll keep badgering me. I said I don’t know nothing and I mean it..”
Kai’s head tilts a bit a hearing that. The way Ameer phrased it made it seem like Kai and his team weren’t the only ones to visit him.
“Someone from the station come by to talk to you before?”
He suddenly tense again and purses his lips like he knew he said something he shouldn’t.
“..Look, I’m not going to make you talk. But if there is something you can give, anything it would be really helpful.” Kai asks going for a more gentle approach.
He could see the battle going on behind Ameer’s eyes. If he can push just a bit more, Kai’s sure he can get some kind of information.
“…You know that is only a matter of time before those to be will find out about her and if she’s lucky, she’ll die quickly. And then the ones who will suffer with be those in the lower district. Do you think things are bad now? Just wait until then..” Kai says darkly.
Ameer looks back at Kai for a few moments. That battle was still ongoing but it was obvious he had made a choice.
“Every so often… I get a visitor. Always asking the same question about the old case.”
“…And you’re sure he’s a police officer?”
Ameer gives Kai a withering look.
“.. Yeah. I’m sure.”
Kai nods to him as he does believe him in that sense. Being from the lower district, you tend to be able to tell people who have something apart from those who don’t.
“He asks you about the old case? What does he ask?”
Ameer pauses for a second, seemingly debating what to say before speaking.
“He just asks me the same question over and over. What happened in the old case? I tell him the same thing over and over. I don’t know anything and nothing happened… I just… went to a party.”
Kai doesn’t know what to say to that. His mind was already starting to race just based on knowing that someone from the force had any hand in any of this. He knew they were… morally ambiguous but to have a part in something like this? Looking the other way is different than being an active participant. Now the question of can he even trust his team to do anything? What if this was all just some witch hunt meant to cover up something bigger?
Kai feels suddenly like a fresh-faced recruit who blindly believes that the police are there for order and justice. He’s long past the idea well at least he thought he was. He had gotten… comfortable with his life.
He forgets that in this city justice is just a game. A cruel and unfair game.
